(Writer’s Note: If this post appears even more random than normal, it’s probably because yours truly is still starry eyed from watching a movie with the same title – for which I am truly apologetic!)

I bet you are puzzling over why my blog has a post titled serendipity – and how it ties in with the rest of my life! Oh but it does dear reader, it does! Serendipity is a big part of everybody’s life – it’s that sudden stroke of good fortune that hits you when you are not looking or not expecting it! To be more exact, let me give you the precise definition: (Source: the built-in dictionary on my snazzy Apple Mac-book – man I LOVE expensive gadgets!)

Serendipity (noun) ser·en·dip·i·ty [ser-uhn-dip-i-tee] = the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way

It was also the title of this charming English film starring John Cussack and Kate Beckinsale – about a man and a woman who meet and fall in love – but challenge their fortunes by exchanging no contact details – and then encounter each other many years later once again. (In case you were wondering, they fall in love and live happily ever after as well – which is probably the reason why I love this chick – flick!!)

Dwell on it for a bit and you will realize that serendipity is not just merely another one of those mellifluous sounding words – although roll it over your tongue and you have to admit that its syllables do arrange themselves in a very musical sort of way! It is indeed a very major component in the fine balance of forces in the universe.

Happy coincidences are what aid most folks along their way, helping them to find direction and meaning in their existence. It’s what guides the next Mozart to the piano, or a budding Picasso to the palette and easel. It’s also the reason why you probably felt that swoop of joy when you met that special someone or just KNEW in your bones when you saw the perfect home or that flattering wedding dress.

Destiny guides us all in whatever we do. Oft I have crossed the pious soul, head bent in prayer, beseeching divinity to twist the wheel of fortune in his favored direction. I must be honest and admit that many a time I have been that soul. Sometimes my prayers were answered – but more often than not, they have been overlooked. When not, I have merely shrugged off the situation with wry acceptance, recognizing that fate has another plan – to which I must gracefully acquiesce.

And while this post may well be just another way of reassuring myself that life is not just an illogical chaos, I truly do believe in a hidden pattern gradually coming to light. Sometimes serendipitous events happen to the best of us – helping us to find a purpose, or guiding us to our own special place in this cosmic world. Providence has not always smiled on me when it came to what I wanted, but in the words of Murphy –

Don’t just believe in miracles, RELY on them!
